Milner, who was a railroad surveyor looking to establish a route from Denver to Salt Lake City. Milner decided the difficult route was not the best fit for train tracks, and the surrounding area was established as Rocky Mountain National Park in The log cabin can still be visited today along US Highway A paid pass is required to enter the National Park.

Once you reach Milner Pass, there is a parking area with restrooms. Seasonality — Trail Ridge Road is closed seasonally every year in the Winter. Typically, the road will open around Memorial Day and will close in late October.

The photo on the left was taken in the afternoon when thunderstorms rolled in and the one on the right was taken the very next day around lunch time. The second day, it was sunny and gorgeous, so we drove from Estes Park to Grand Lake and back and we noticed that the views not only change from the weather, but from the time of day and the position of the sun in the sky. The alpine lake, also known as Poudre Lake, freezes completely in the winter months, making it a dead lake because no fish can survive. The gentle pass divides the headwaters of the Cache la Poudre River which issues from Poudre Lake just east of the pass and several creeks near the headwaters of the Colorado River to the west.
